Chickpeas Developed For Australia
Adapted from a Spanish variety for Australia in 1984, Macarena chickpeas are grown exclusively in Ord River and Central Queensland areas and its large seed is highly sort after. Although it has been more recently replaced by the Kimberley Large (released by CLIMA in WA) and disappeared from our shelves during the long running drought in Queensland – from 2022 it is back in stock.
Bigger Seeds, Better Value
Although it has a larger seed, it is frost-sensitive and more prone to insect and weather damage compared with some of the southern varieties. This makes it a riskier choice for farmers who in turn demand a higher price to choose it for planting on their acreage. The Macarena Grande is priced as an affordable alternative to the Ord River chickpea brand, whilst retaining much of its performance benefits.
